Background

The Burma Lawyers' Council is an independent organization which was formed in a liberated area of Burma in 1994. It is neither aligned nor is it under the authority of any political organization. Individual lawyers and legal academics have joined together of their own free will to form this organization.

During the BSPP era, Burma Bar Council and all lawyers' associations in the whole country have never at any time cooperated, or supported the activities of the BSPP. The lawyers in private practice consisted of persons whose sole purpose for entering the legal profession was to secure a livelihood, and those who actively sought to oppose the oppressive legal system and its laws, and to represent and assist the people who were suffering adversity.

About

U Myint Thein

U Myint Thein

U Myint Thein, a former NLD member and a founding member of the Burma Lawyers' Council (BLC), has been a steadfast advocate for legal awareness and fundamental support to those in need since BLC's establishment in 1994. A key figure in the 1988 pro-democracy movement, he has been subjected to political persecution by the military junta since 1990. His unwavering commitment lies in upholding the rule of law, ensuring judicial integrity, and restoring democracy in Myanmar. Through his relentless efforts, he continues to champion the promotion of a Federal Union and the establishment of a federal constitution that embodies justice, equality, and democratic governance.

Our Processes

Legal Aid Process

Since its establishment in 1994, the Burma Lawyers' Council (BLC) has operated along the Thai-Myanmar border to promote justice, human rights, and democratic values in response to the breakdown of the rule of law under Myanmar's military dictatorship. Comprising a network of dedicated legal professionals, BLC provides legal aid, conducts advocacy, offers training, and engages in policy work to support vulnerable groups, including migrants, victims of human trafficking, and conflict-affected communities. Through these efforts, BLC has played a vital role in advancing access to justice and strengthening legal aid systems.
